I remember going down to the tip head to see this. I think from memory the steering failed as it was crossing the bar. It was there for about 24 hours with the engine running to keep it firmly on the small beach there until the steering could be repaired and I think it just reversed off without any assistance. That's how I recall it but someone else may have more and better detail.
