DescriptionOBriens mine went from 1927 to 1960 when the mine at the 2nd rail tunnel to Rewanui closed they started another mine not too far from the Rewanui backshunt in 1960, however after working it for half the year they abandoned the mine after producing 727 tons. Their old mine had produced 213 800 ton. I found two mines that I think would be their last, 1960, and some exploritary holes.Map^[1]ContributorMoe Bowes

Thx Moe for all the work you do up around the old coal mines. It is always interesting reading your posts. My grandfather Stan Manderson worked at O'Briens during the second world war and years following.

My father Tom Merriman also worked at O’Briens during that time

Wayne Merriman Hi Wayne, I hadnt heard that before so I will put him on the list. A few of the guys working there when it closed went to DN and worked a mine there. I remember Tom would visit my father when he came up to the coast.
