Around the late 1930s or early 40s Mrs Butterfield from Taylorville & two women friends biked to Ch-ch reaching Springfield the first day where they slept in a deep dry ditch before going on to Ch-ch. Apparently there were about 17 gates on the road between farms to open back then The road wouldn't have changed much over the years especially between Porters Pass & Jacksons which was still a very rough gravel track when I biked over it in 1969.

With two decent fords?I remember it being shingle from the Kowhai River right trhough to just before Kumara in the early 60's and the Lewis being worse as rhe Rahu was unsealed too.

That must have been a hard ride? , no gears in those days, rough gravel tracks , and all rivers to cross? Hard long ride from Springfield to the top of Porter's pass

They look pretty fit.. what a great ride to do in a group!

I knew a couple who caught the rail car to Arthur’s Pass then biked down the mountain to Greymouth. Caught rail car home later date
