CommentsRoger Gardiner I stayed with Barry Steel (a relative) at the hotel on a number of occasions in in the early 1970’s.
Was with State Coal Mines. Kevin Fisher, Don Guthrie, Bernie Taylor were regulars.
Barry’s brother,Russel, a vet in Taumarunui was gunned down on his own farm in a drug related incident by his son’s associates. What a waste of a great life.

Brian Langton Stayed there in 1965 after the North South game great memories.

David Carty My mother inlaw Belle and Harrold Curtis were proprietors of that hotel in the mid 1960s

Margaret Wright I worked at the Railway Hotel in 1968 when my mother-in-law Belle Curtis owned it, i also worked for Barry Steele and his wife. Jeannie Taylor was the Housemaid upstairs and Ellien Lees was the cook Man could she put a lovely meal up. Lofty Groom came and boarded there after his accident Tommy Sinnott was one of the Barman

Margaret Wright Harold's Father was Ivan Oswald Bernard Curtis and his Mum was Ellen (nee Gamble)Ellen died very young I think about 31-32 Years old So which branch of the of the Curtis's do you belong to

Patrick Beban My father Jack Beban was born in the Railway Hotel, then named the Trafalgar. The date was August 1911. His father Artie owned the pub along with his wife Margaret Slattery. Dad's christening mug was engraved with the words "The wowser". It was given at the time of his christening by the boarders at the hotel meaning Jack was the only person in the establishment who didn't indulge in the demon drink.

If only it was restored back to its beautiful originality. Today its condition and look reminds me of an architectural dog's breakfast.
