Like elsewhere in the world - many could not afford headstones and maybe just had a simple stone marker. Where there are headstones, unfortunately the weather gradually eroded the inscriptions

Nelson Creek cemetery is not in Nelson Creek but it is sort of near Trigon Road which is where all the action was. As a Nelson Creek boy I have always puzzled over why it is where it is and not near the Nelson Creek Church or even near the hall.

Many of the people buried in this Nelson Creek cemetery were first interred in the Try Again Terrace Cemetery (on the banks of the Nelson Creek). People wanted to mine the land that the cemetery was on so The Nelson Creek Cemetery was formed and the bodies from the Try Again Cemetery were removed to the Nelson Creek Cemetery. The Grey River Argus has articles on the removal of the bodies overa period - look in Papers Past from 1886 to 1887.
