Pass between the Torlesse and Big Ben ranges. The road from Canterbury to the West Coast turns up the Kowai River into the hills just beyond Springfield, crossing Porters Pass into the Castle Hill Basin. Great picture. Having a breather before the steep stretch. Apparently the original track came up on the right hand side of that ridge behind the travellers shown, coming up to this spot. There used to be a hotel at the bottom of the Pass
