I recall driving my mother up the dirt road on a miserable wet day when a bus came around one of the bends, I had to move hard left to avoid, and slid into a ditch carved out by the rain. No problem. Bus stopped, miners got out and lifted the car bodily back on the entre of the road. Those guys were strong, but had a good spirit.

Ian Miller Dad told me that when he was boarding at taylorville and working at Dobson mine in the late 1940`s.. they went to a dance and on the way came across the slip which blocked the road.. so they all got out of the car and lifted the car over the slip and continued to the dance.

I recall driving up there with my mother one day when it was raining (I mean real rain.) A bus full of miners came flying around a corner, not exactly completely left, and I had to pull hard to the left to avoid a collision. We missed colliding but the left wheels slid down into the gutter. How does one get out of that? As it turned out, easy. The bus stopped and a crowd of miners got out. I was told, "Don't get out of the car. It's bloody raining." They then picked the car up and plonked it back in the middle of the road, waved, and ran back to the bus.

My Dad taught me to drive a Road Service bus up and down these hairpins. Real slow at first as I turned the big steering wheel quickly round and round then back again. If you could drive up and down the Millerton track to either Millerton or Stockton, you could drive anywhere.
