DescriptionGreymouth's first ever car appeared on Christmas Day 1903. It's owner was photographer Arthur W Schaef. The car had registration no.2. It was shipped to Greymouth in one of Blackball Shipping Line coal boats. The car is a French Peugot.

Mum, Edna (Gilmore) told a tale of sitting on her family home porch in Blaketown lobbing stone onto the road (a classic 1920s ) occupation and hitting the car owned by (here the name she mentioned was foreign, and sadly I’ve forgotten it), but he was a very excitable gentleman and stopped the car to mums horror! and she climbed a tree. Her mum came out and after much shouting on both sides that involved our grandmother denying it could have been any of her girls as they were too well behaved, he left. At which point Nana called out ‘you can come down now, and don’t do that again’!

These cars were imported to NZ by a Mr Schaff of Wellington, he imported around 5 of them and one is in Te Papa.
