You're right Nickel Spoon report preparing an airstrip in 1970 about 1/2 mile south east of Jerry Junction trig. Height of nickel boom when companies like Poseidon in Western Australia who's shares reached $280. Hence any sniff of nickel or even in your company name produced excitement. There was alluvial nickel in the area however picked up in stream sediment sampling. If you want to read the full report go to NZPAM website but you have to register.

Ivan (Boom Boom )Thompson of Waipopo near Temuka was the explosives man forthe mining company.They towed in the hut Robert Long (Beanstalk) lives in next to the DOC hut at the mouth of Gorge River with a dozer.

This would make beansprout happy , wasn't he worried about losing his airstrip down by the sea?

Peter Armstrong yes . The strip at gorge river is a bit of a worry. This strip is nine kilometres away and is at elevation of 580 m.... so might be a bit of a hike.

Good podcast by the Educated Hunter with John Greer is worth a listen, John used to work in the area and has a bit to say about it. Bulldozer was driven up from the river and then abandoned, later the Egglings drove it back down and it got barged out.
