Haven't seen that image before. Good to see "fresh" material on here. Do you know about "Old Jack" Keith Ross. This is near where you used to live and the vicinity of the former Accomodation Houses/Hotels.

A wide road, well formed by the look. Suggests motor vehicles rather than horse and dray??

As early as 1877 there were moves afoot to widen the Lake Kaniere track to a dray road with a minimum 8 foot width. Pretty sure this had been completed by the early 1880's. The tracks in the picture on the road surface look too narrow to me to have been made by a motor car. Another dating angle would be to check the dates James Ring worked in the Hokitika area. It wouldn't surprise me if this image is from the 1880's or 1890's prior to the first accommodation house being built.

The earliest newspaper mention I can see for Greymouth photographer James Ring being in the Hokitika area is 1884.

My mother in laws grandfather had a homestead on lake kaniere. Way back in the settler days im not sure of her family name though.

Hemmingson or Ross those are both names she has in a book i could find but i cant seem to see if that her side or her husbands side. Her ashes are coming back to there soon though.

Papers Past reveals that the dray road to Lake Kanieri was completed in 1885. There is also a death notice for a John Coull, resident of Lake Kanieri, in Nov 1888. It is a bit of a long shot but I wonder if John Coull may have been Old Jack?

It is where the current road meets the lake near the outlet. The Kaniere River will be just to the left of this picture out of shot.
