DescriptionRapahoe Beach Lagoon , first photo shows the piles in lagoon back in the 60s and second taken this year, note the large shingle embankment you had to walk over to get to the beach, nowadays no embankment and piles are almost under the gravel. We all had our swimming lessons there with Mrs Mills our teacher , all 28 of us who attended Rapahoe School , from 5 yr old to 12 yr olds , not a teachers aide or parent help in sight. Tommi Mills could your mum swim ? . plus there was the diving board on the piles. Great times .

Jenny Tindale I can remember the driving board now you mention it 28 children, one teacher, that's awesome, wouldnt be allow to take a class to the beach to learn to swim nowadays

Used to swim there late 50's early 60's when down visiting the Grandparents in Runanga. Fun times

Our family went there for picnics and swimming a lot when I was little....1950s. I almost drowned in that lagoon. Fortunately I was grabbed by a family friend...... (Ian Love).

I have a large scar on my foot from getting cut by either glass or tin exposing the bones to my toes when playing in the lagoon, many stitches and weeks at the outpatients

Wow that brings back memories I used to swim in there in the later 50s and the big challenge as an 8 year old was to dog paddle to the other side

I remember those days! Fabulous family picnics swimming with eels and sandflies and friends. We wd all bike to the beach and Nana wd come in taxi with food. Men wd join us frm pub for dinner. Wonderful times.
