I just loved going out over the bar on that old lady as a school kid. No parental permission just the invite from Captain Harle was all that was needed. Lovely guy and what a swimmer he was too at the baths

I had an uncle Jack Dawson who was an engineer on the Westport dredge back in the 1950s. Not sure if it as that one.

Used to hear it from Dobson when working the tide at night .

Probably the Eileen ward the suction dredge that ended up going up to the opua harbor in the bay of islands mid 50s.

That’s right one could hear it about 6 miles away they had to shut the bloody thing down when the kids were doing school cert so they could conserntrate

I often went out on it over the bar to dump the tailings. We used to listen for the noise to stop, then race over to the wharf to get on it before it sailed out.
