First school at Lower Kokatahi commenced 1880 Mrs Harris taught children in rented building which became unsuitable. Education board purchased land from Mr Diedrich near Duck creek where new school was built 13 pupils. 1888 another classroom built - 21 pupils. At this time Govt instigated policy of retrenchment as Country in grip of World wide depression so half time schooling introduced - Mr MacDonald sole charge teacher began teaching alternative days at Lower & Upper Kokatahi schools. Children living between both schools attended both (which upset the rolls). During 1896 Lower Kokatahi roll peaked 27..from then on until 1930s remained fairly static at 20. In 1935 the school was relocated to new site along further away from the hotel. While school was being moved, classes were held in the hall next to Longford Hotel. Paul Cullen There's a few of my rele's in that pic - May Kemp, Eva Kemp, my mums sisters. They used to live at Lake Kaniere. The Woolhouse's will be rele's too.
