DescriptionAs the ships come into Greymouth, the wagons of coal, for the ship`s order are shunted onto the line under the crane, then John Carter eases along the train of "Q " wagons,as each empty wagon is dropped back to the wharf.Then Jimmy Olsen of South Beach hooks the crane onto the next one, and up goes another wagon under the carefree eye of crane driver, Dudley Palmer.

Dudley Palmer. He was a character. Our next door neighbours in Doyle street for quite a few years. He took us kids (David Martin and myself ) up in one of the cranes one Saturday morning for a bit of a spin. There weren't any Colliers there at the time so he gave his a bit of a tiki tour. After a while he said there were no dunnies on the cranes so if you need a number one we just use that grate over there in the corner because its pretty high up there. I looked at the grate then looked over at Dudley at the controls with his finger poised over a button with a big grin on his face. I may have been young but I knew he was a cheeky bugger and that grate wasn't a dunny, it was a dirty big ventilation fan. He was a great bloke very funny man. Never forget that day.

Awww brings back memories of those cranes and my dad Dudley Palmer. Thanks Heather for the memories, as Dad passed away almost 14 years ago.
