Description Marsden as it used to be ...taken from No Name road area...circa 1870-1880s foreground Pioneer Hotel.(J.Card) also on left Fitzsimmons Hotel, then Sherret the Blacksmith..on right Boyd Thompson, Butcher, Criterion Hotel (W. Bell) behind this hotel, Adam Blair Coachman, then Hansen, Bootmaker, Then Marsden Hotel, and behind that the Assembly Hall where all the early dances were held, then used as a hay shed, opposite was a butchery. Below the Maori creek road were stables, and going towards Cards creek a butchery, and on the banks opposite the school we have Hamilton
Hewitt, Albion Hotel.....five hotels ...over Cards creek ..on left side of Chapel Hill was the Abattoir...on chapel hill to the right..the Catholic Chapel.Date of Photoca.1870`s - 1880`s.Map^[1]ContributorJillian Johnson

Poor chapel was burnt when someone was tidying up and sparks got under the metal roof into the original wooden shingles ...no water on hand so it was doomed....Dad remembered it and he was born 1909 so after that....I reckon....that’s the best photo I’ve ever seen, but it was a simple wooden building,you might like to read “ Valley of Little Towns” in most libraries gives its history...

The No Name Road was the original main road to Greymouth before the Kumara Gold Rush. Started at Greenstone and came out at Marsden and onto Greymouth.

Sandra Arnott No .Freddie lived at Duncanville around 10Km. East of Marsden. Duncanville Also known as Maori Creek.

My grandparents Philip and Olive Amberger had the boarding house on Marsden Rd, and my father Philip, was born there. He married Jess Patterson, born Greymouth, father was Gordon Patterson, local undertaker.

I was living off the Coast when that book came out circa 1986 but managed to get a copy. I still refer to it now and again. I did some work with the NZFS in the back of Dunganville in 1977 so used to drive through Marsden morning and afternoon and have been back in recent years.

The Catholic Church at Marsden, was destroyed by fire on the 19th February 1914. This was the report in the newspaper dated - Grey River Argus, 20 February 1914, Page 2.
It was reported in town yesterday afternoon that the Marsden church was destroyed by fire. The fire apparently originated from bush fires in the vicinity.

My father Len Lane always told me the church groundsman was clearing scrub from around the church when a spark got into the shingles on the roof…..so true
