Wayne Searle This is a piece radio carbon dated at 1300years old and it stopped absorbing carbon then its ring count is circa 410 years
It has been along with other samples pulled out of excavations as new subdivision evolve in Halswell Christchurch. My initial attempt to cut it with a chain saw just made the chain spark as it is so hard. I finally cut it badly with a new chiseling chain.

We had lots of dead (standing) Matai on our farm at Lake Kaniere - I always presumed that they were killed when the a big slip came down off Mt Tuhua years before. The old man slowly chopped them down for firewood some of which he would sell in town. Baz

Joe and Bill were brothers. Represented NZ . Joe retired to Linwood Ave and had a large section behind the house where he grew exotic pine xmas trees for sale. He also played league for NZ. I think he toured the UK in 50's.
