David Wood it used to be in Greymouth.

It was dark grey back in my days in the 50s when it was working Greymouth's Grey River. It had an iconic sound that once heard it you will never forget

This dredge was used in Greymouth first then transferred to Westport later on think

David Carty Was purchased by the Greymouth Harbour Board and arrived from the UK around 1909 gave reliable service and transferred to Westport in the 1960's or early 70's from memory

I worked on the Mawhera in the 1970s in Westport, I believe the Mawhera was named after the Grey river, which was originally called Mawhera back in the 1800s.

Went out with David Tillyshorts dad ( chief engineer ). Awesome experience as a 13/14 yr old. Never forget his passion and concentration as he kept that might beast moving as it was designed..

We used to fish for herring off the side of it when it was tied up to the wharf. Captain Moar ? was the Captain I think.

Napier had a very similar dredge in the early 1950s. Whakariri. Could hear her working when she was well out, clank clank scrape skreech, etc.

As a kid in Greymouth, I along with others waited on it to fill its hoppers and Capt Harle would come alongside the wharf and he would invite us aboard and we would go out into the open sea to dump the load and return to the wharf where we kids would go ashore. A great experience without parental permission or even their knowledge where we were. So lucky to have lived in those times on the Best Coast.
