I still use Grandad Fountaine's push lawnmower from Westport. Our lawns are so healthy as a result as the cut is gentle. However we do have to do our lawns every three days in times of growth to keep on top of the growth

My dad used one for years, then he bought, what we used to call, a motor mower. Now it's a bit trendy for those with teeny yards to buy one.

This mower was great for doing edges. I was always amazed to see my father take one-metre runs towards the garden edges in quick succession, moving along the garden bit by bit. On rare occasions he went past the edge into the garden somewhat making my mother furious. Maybe on purpose to make a point - or two.
I was not a willing mower!

Our front lawn at Tindale Rd Greymouth was about 45 degrees and Dad put an electric motor, cable and rope on a push mower! . My job was to walk along the flat path in front of the house, holding the electric cable and rope while Dad struggled along the slope with the 'mower',try to imagine it. Talk about a Micky Mouse idea.
Valmai Cohen
