We have a very similar lamp from the then newly closed Ross Railway Station, given to our small museum which we had at that time in Ross. Our lamp has a red light on the front side and a metal attachment on the back to fit on a "train hook". In January, 2021 we met Roly Anderson aged 90, who had been a train driver here in Ross. He lived in No 38 Railway House, Ross which was by the railway line. This is the info he gave us about the lamps-hand written by him. "The red lantern is a tail light for the back of the train. There were three but this (our red one) is the middle one that attaches to the train. The other two were at the side on the back. From the Ross Railway side there were two lamps and showed white to the front and red to the back." Inside the lantern is a little lamp (trademark BARTONS) that fuels the lantern.ContributorNikki Eagle
