My grandfather William Goodfellow lived at Lake Mahinapua and had boat(s) and boatshed(s) at the lake. He used to commute to Hokitika and back via the lake, outlet creek and Hoki River. Mahinapua Creek was a much used waterway prior to the Hokitika - Ross railway opening.

Love spending time at Mahinapua it brings back so many memories like catching the train with Mum and my sisters carrying our lunch then a walk through the bush and down to Swimmers Beach which by the way there was a beach after lunching and swimming the long walk retracing our steps to catch the train back to Hokitika at 3pm.Susan Hustwick
We had lots of fun at the Girl Guide Campbwith Mrs Wendy Northcroft, one of our leaders. In smelly tents that we had to dig a trench around, made washing basin stands out of branches and tied with special lashing. Learnt how to make a bush stretcher and stabilise a broken leg so that we could move an injured patient to the road. The only thing I didn’t like apart from the mozzies was having to cook an egg in an orange skin on the campfire….I’ve never forgotten that taste! It was my mother’s invention. A oncerd
