About this image
DescriptionTwinset RM 110 at Ross Station on the West Coast 1971-72. This was a normal service but used by a bunch of NZRLS Canterbury Branch members on their West Coast Wanderer, a couple of days touring the West Coast by normal NZR services. In those days you could go as far south as Ross, as far north as Westport and also if there was time up the Rewanui Branch to the Terminus. Gordon Jory, Canterbury Railway Society collection.

Mum and I used to travel from Greymouth to Christchurch on the railcar regularly to see my sister. Because Dad worked in the railway we were entitled to great discounts and would travel regularly for a quarter of the fare, $2.50 pp from Grey to ChCh. We could travel anywhere in NZ cheaply. We took advantage of the annual free pass to travel on the Interislander and the overnight train to Auckland to visit my aunty and uncle. Those were the days when we lived in a wealthy country.
Linda Howard

I remember the railcars well. Used to go with mum to Greymouth shopping and had to go on railcar. Also we went to manual training at Hokitika High on the railcar. We moved from Ross to Canterbury in 1964. I went to Rangiora High. Good old days growing up in Ross. All my forebears are Coasters from Westport, Kumara and Cameron.

Used to load timber by hand by stacking and sliding it onto the flatbed down skids greased with tallow. Ross mill was roughly behind where this photo was taken and our timber skids down behind the guy in the photo.
