I was one of several Firemen that fought the grain store fire IT is very clear in the photo that the commercial hotel is still intact , we were fighting to save it , and and achieved it , the hotel was saved and we had a beer in the bar after , It still annoys me that they call it the commercial hotel fire , IT WAS THE GRAINSTORE THAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE NOT THE HOTEL .

I don't think there was a flood wall there then, just the wharf. I watched it from the wharf with half of Greymouth.

Had the video of this fire. Alan McEnaney gave my parents a copy.Should be around somewhere. Remember watching Trevor Malloy and Gabe Anisy, part of the Cobden Fire Brigade, on the balcony of the Commercial.

i was in that crowd watching many years ago . i used to deliver Grey Star in 1970 s always got a lemonade as tip on collection day . step father Joe Mc Grath used to take me there after footy at Wingham park on Sundays i was allowed 1 beer . now a side story he told me the Golden Eagle Hotel on the corner had a large wooden eagle on the roof and certain people removed it one night and its buried in a garden in Marlborough st maybe its still there ?

Yes i remember it well, the
Skinheads that lived lower Bright street did a slow walk up the street as it was the only hotel that would let them inside. NO the flood wall was not started till after the second 1988 flood.
