Blaketown and my teacher was Mrs Nelson. She seemed to me a hard old bat who was determined to change me from being left handed but I saw her 20 years later outside the church when i got married.

Birchfield had an aided school from 1895 and an official Education Board School open in 1901 with a roll of 23. The first photo I have is 1905 and has a number of my Griffiths relatives in it including Rod my grandfather. My book on the history of Birchfield - Industrial Hub of Buller 1880’s - 1930’s is being launched in Westport on Saturday 21 August.
