I remember it so well because both my grandparents lived in Westport and went there every school holiday and later on when my parents got a car we went every week. my granddad took me down to the esplanade every day, even on the day of the earthquake, I think around 1964/ 1963. we went for a walk to dump the rice pudding because the soot ruined it. that was my first experience of an earthquake before the the big one in 1968
