The KARTIGI and KIWITEA were steam powered, their sister-ship was the KAPONGA, which was lost on the Bar in 1932, the KAITAWA and KONUI were motor ships, built to replace the steam powered colliers, The KAITAWA was lost with all hands near the Pandora Bank Cape Reinga in May 1966.
