I am sad to report the passing of well known writer, journalist, photographer and former Christchurch Tram Driver, Roy Sinclair passed away in 2021 from Pancreatic Cancer. Roy was the writer of several rail books including "Spirit of Steam" and "Rail; The Great New Zealand Adventure". Roy took possibly one of my favourite ever steam photographs, this 1970 alpine view of A 423 climbing away from Cass with its delivery excursion from Greymouth. I'm fond of this photo as apart from the beautifully crafted shot of steam in the mountains my late Uncle Noel Watson was driving the locomotive on this section. RIP.

That must have been at the very end of the steam era they were all old and worn out and at the end of their days very much like some of us humans looking back at the nostalgiac days of railway travel gone by and the freight that they hauled I am a 58 model and will always have fond memories of the heaving beasts passing by in Dobson just thirty metres from my home
