My Grandad used to work at the Flax Mill in Bentham St - many a time spent driving "out country" with him in the truck collecting flax.

I used to cut flax in Westport in the mid 1960s. Two of cut it in the weekends and worked like slaves to get a ton and a half or two ton. Hard yakka and all for eight to nine quid a weekend
The flax was stripped at the flax mill and dried on fences at the old aerodrome site - north side of the Buller River near the Shingle beach
