DescriptionI spotted this beautiful piece of Hokitika history in the Mayfield Second Hand Shop recently. I would have loved to bring it home to the Coast. Apparently T. Robinson and Sons Cordial factory was on Sewell St opposite St Marys Catholic Church about 1900.ContributorTom Belton

Nice item. As Tom has said Thomas Robinson & Sons operated in Sewell St., Hokitika. A new factory started there in 1902. The sons largely ran the business and it became Robinson Bros in 1920 and closed in 1948. Oliver Robinson the last operator of the factory, though retired was alive and living in Fitzherbert Street when I went to school in Hoki during the 60's & early 70's.

Brothers James and Thomas Robinson started the first cordial factory at Taylorville in 1890.
Thomas continued the business in Hokitika while James started a cordial factory in Reefton.
My Gt Uncle Horace Honey married May Robinson who was the daughter of James Robinson.

I have one that has j Davies hokitika written on the top. Was originally covered on cane.

Price is quite in the high side. These stone jars are quite common and there are alot scattered around on the coast and the rest of NZ. Worth 250 280 dollers going off others iv seen sell over the years.

The Hokitika catholic convent and boarding school was opposite that church. I boarded there with my 2 sisters in the 1940’s. Our family lived then in Okuru, no school or shop or doctor there in those days, so we had to board at the convent to get an education.
