I see my Dad Alan Holmes when he was a kid in Kaiata one of his chores was too milk the family cow they grew pigs there too and used to hike into Greymouth and sell them,the Holmes boys hauling the dead pigs on their backs. I well remember my father telling me that storySheryl O'Leary
That's my father Alan Holmes. His father Ralph Holmes taught at Kaiata School from 1934 to 1944.

My mother - Dalma Nimmo (née Bradley) is the lady in blue on the far left - I guess that makes her the first in the front row. She was a pupil at Kaiata in the late 1930’s before she moved to Grey Main in her Standard 6 year. Ralph homes was the headmaster while she was there.

I would suggest that you would be amazed at the number of good people who went through that school Kaiata was a sawmilling hub in the early days and along with Dobson provided a great deal of the timber for the construction of early Greymouth and beyond
