As I recall the Blaketown beach was seldom suitable as a place for aeroplanes to land. It was a rarity to see it as depicted here. In the early 1940s us kids used to walk and bike around the grass aerodrome which was between the beach and the lagoon near the hospital. It was used by Bert Mercer flying Fox Moths and RNZAF Tiger Moths on training flights. The occasional DH Dominie also flew in.

When the land was reclaimed for the Greymouth Aerodrome, from Blaketown to Karoro was a line of 44 gallon metal drums, used as a strong fence, and all filled with stones and sand. They have long corroded away but you can still see the remains of some. The Aerodrome road was immediately inside this drum wall and the road went right round the Aerodrome and ended at the intersection of water walk road and the northern "holding paddocks" of Greymouth's Abbatoir, which was located on Shelley Street.

My dad was taking off in a Tiger Moth when it was like that and hit a log thrown into the longer grass by rough seas.. The plane tipped on it's nose and broke the wooden propellor. He bolted another one on and away he went ...no accident inspection then. He had the broken one hanging on the garage wall as a souvenir. Wonder what happened to it...

I remember seeing a Tiger Moth on the Omoto Racecouse on the way to school in the I950’s. We were told it had crashed but it looked OK from up on the road. Never heard any more about it.

I don't know the origin of the photo source but my copy was sent to me by Steve Lowe. Historians know details of plane and pilot and by deduction of schedule reports and ruling out other known West Coast landing sites it is assumed that this is somewhere along Blaketown beach prior to the aerodrome development nearby.
