DescriptionThe Koranui Incline was an inclined tramway on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand that operated for four years from late 1882 to the end of 1886. It was used to transport coal from a mine high on Mt Frederick down to a railway line near sea level 1. The incline was located in the Waimangaroa valley and had a total fall of 700 meters and a length of 3.6 kilometers 1. Initially, it was powered by a single engine that moved the whole length of ropeway, but was later modified into a series of five self-acting inclines 1. The survey for the incline was completed by John Rochfort by 19 October 1877, construction began in 1879, and the incline opened in November 1882 1. The incline did not work well initially, but after being remodeled by engineer Henry Hughes, it was altered into five self-acting inclines, each with an endless rope. Fantastic. God those men must of worked so hard to build that back then.

What an awesome photo in so many aspects. Have to agree with previous comment about the effort to put this incline in. Clearing the bush, milling the timber, the grading for the line getting the machinery up the hill.

And sharpening there hand saws every day to cut all that timber and digging all the holes by hand and drilling all the bolt holes with a brace
