DescriptionOn 2 January 1963 my Christchurch-based parents took a trip to the Coast in their Ford Ten. They went via the Lewis and spent three nights in Greymouth (as their base) before heading north. According to my mother’s diary, they stayed in a “pleasant motel, small but comfortable but only one blanket each.” That evening they had greasy steak and chips for six shillings each at a “restaurant.” The photo, which has been slightly cropped, was taken either that day or the day after.Date of Photo2 January 1963 Map^[1]ContributorStephen Wright

The old S-shaped rail bridge that brought coal from the Runanga mines to the wharf at Greymouth.
Behind that is the old Cobden road bridge that was very narrow.
Both bridges now replaced by big concrete structures. The old circular piers are still there having survived many floods

Drove the piles for the new railway bridge and pulled the old one down,think it was the last S shaped bridge in the southern hemisphere
