Built in Dunedin in 1867 for the Harbour Steam Co. Sold in 1872 to N Edwards & Co (then owned by John Symons and the Shipping Dept which traded under the name of the Anchor Line of Steam Packets). Sold to Anchor Steam Shipping Co by estate of J Symons, Dec 1880. Altered from paddle to screw, 1884. Wrecked on retaining wall at Greymouth when entering river 14 Oct 1885. Vessel was badly holed and became a total wreck.

---- her on the quarter and becoming unmanageable,the WALLACE was carried onto the Rocks of the protective works where she became a total wreck.The passengers were landed by means of a connection between the ship and Shore,consisting of planks and ropes.She was stated to be always sluggish in answering the Helm.The vessel was no sooner on the Rocks than she was full of Holes,the water pouring in and out of her side as she rolled.The WALLACE was an iron screw steamer of 89 tons gross and 56 tons net- built in Dunedin in 1867 - Dimensions were length - 123.9ft, beam- 15.2ft,- depth - 7.2ft. When Entering the Grey River on October 14 - 1885 - the Steamer was caught by a Sea and thrown Dangerously near the rocks,before she could regain her position in the Channel another SEA STRUCK
