One Xmas in the 60s dad took us for a drive up a road at the 12 mile?? And we hopped out of the car to watch the torrent rushing to the Tasman and I have never forgotten the noise of the boulders being wash down banging

We survived 1988 in a 14 foot caravan, with 2 aduls, 2pre schoolers, 1 big dog and 4 cats. Hubby worked in Mackay Street while the kids and i were either in Grey Caravan park or out the other side or Runanga at a little caravan spot that i think used to be a school. Name started with H, i think. Was very wer and the noise from the sea was phenomenal and the grounds were so covered with spume that it looked like snow.

Sunday 2am, recorded 16kms upstream from the mouth at Te Kuha Measuring Station: 12.733m..Previous 1970 record 11.846m.. The sign below travelled 37kms to wash up at Carters Beach..
