My grandfather did the same in Reefton; having a uniform AND a bicycle was a big draw card, he rose up the ranks in Christchurch and Hawarden, Granity, Hari Hari back to Reefton where he married, and then became Post Master in Kumara, then to the North Island, Southland Otago, back to the Coast and finally retired at Westport
