AddBy: William Gray2nd Aug 2021 8:36PMMATTHEW FLINDERS. Built in 1938 by Burntisland Shipbuilding Co ltd Scotland for H.C. Sleigh Coasters of Melbourne, as a replacement for the ABEL TASMAN which was wrecked here in July 1936. First call to Greymouth was on the 9-3-39, and her last call was on the 24-2-50, although she made several calls here between those dates and some calls were also made during the war years. The MATTHEW FLINDERS was sold in 1956 to Finish owners and renamed PIRKKO NURINEN, later sold in 1967 to new owners in Italy and renamed RAUMA at which time she was converted from coal to oil, and was finally scrapped at Valencia Spain in 1971. Length 296ft, breadth 44ft, and loaded draft 19ft. Gross Tonnage 2,234.
