I'd say your mum's just in the process of changing the direction of the wringer.

Peter Armstrong Yes, probably the position of the lever in Noeline’s hand is taking the washing out of the washing machine. Back to vertical would stop the wringer, and towards her body would take the washing back into the machine.
Full attention required all the time.

I wonder if the washing machine was run from a petrol motor like the 1 mum used. I used a wringer washing machine until the mid 80’s. Great for getting grotty overalls clean (boiling water, cup of handy Andy & leave to ‘stew’ for 30 minutes or so)

So remember my mother doing this ... the wringer that could be swung so that it covered 2 rinsing tubs. There was always blue stuff in the 2nd rinse. Just called "Blue" I think. It was supposed to make the whites, whiter.
