As already stated by previous posts, there were Six Loch Class frigates in the NZ Navy, which served NZ from the late 1940,s until they they were retired from service in the late 1950,s and early 1960,s. Even though there were over 100 ordered, only 28 were built. Some were in the Royal Navy, many off them found their way in to the Royal Canadian , and Royal NZ Navy. They were all named after Scottish Lochs, the KANIERE was the ex LOCH ACHRAY, PUKAKI ex LOCH ACHANALT, HAWEA ex LOCH ECK, ROTOITI ex LOCH KATRINE, TAUPO ex LOCH SHIN, and the TUTIRA ex LOCH MORLICH. The PUKAKI and ROTOITI were built by Henry Robb at Leith Scotland, who was also famous for building many ships for the Union Co, namely the KAITANGATA, KAITAWA, KONUI etc, they also built the 1st and 2nd PURIRI and the MAMAKU for the Anchor Co. The KANIERE, HAWEA, PUKAKI, and the ROTOITI all visited Greymouth at various times over the years, mainly in the 1950,s. Here is a list of their visits KANIERE arrive 30-3-49 from Milford Sound, depart 2-4-49 for Westport. HAWEA. arrive 16-10-54, from Westport, dep 18-10- 54 for Milford Sound. KANIERE. arrive 3-10-55 from sea, dep 7-10-55 for Milford sound. PUKAKI arrive 19-9-56 from sea dep 22-9-56 for Milford Sound KANIERE arrive 12-9-58 from sea. dep 17-9-58 for Milford Sound. and the ROTOITI arrive 16-4-63 from Auckland, dep 16-4-63, the ROTOITI was the last of the Loch Class to visit here, the TAUPO, and the TUTIRA never called here. All 6 were sold for breaking up between 1961 and 1967. and were towed to Hong Kong.
