Glenn Johnston I have noticed the name Poingdestre both in New Zealand and In Jersey (Channel Islands) associated with the importation of cattle. I was interested because I had noticed that emigrant families took the same things with them wherever they went. Have not completed the study.

Mary Moffitt Susan Poingdestre was from Jersey Channel Islands. She had relatives already in NZ when she came out alone as a single woman in 1874 to work as a domestic servant (possibly for Canterbury relatives). A Poingdestre farmed Blue Cliffs in Sth Canterbury in the early 1860's but I think that big station mainly ran sheep though it would also have had working bullocks, dairy cows & dry stock.⁠

Hi Glenn, Would they be related to the Jackson family who lived in Jacksons in the 1950s.

Margaret Mckee No or at least not closely. There were at least three distinct lines of Jacksons on the Coast in the C19th. Our lot came to NZ from Australia. (Victorian & Tasmanian connections) I've heard that the Jackson's of that ilk also have Victoria, Australia connections.

Bill Drake No. I don't think there are any Jackson's of Jackson's Bay or none that can trace to whom the bay was named after. That South Westland name pre dates the gold rush era settlement of the Coast and is likely associated with the sealers/whalers/sailors that operated temporarily around the coastline in the early C19th.⁠
