About this image
DescriptionDoes anyone know the story behind this brick. Greymouth Brick Company maybe? I found it under our house today. We have been told there was a brick kiln on our section between Fernhill Place and Redwood Place but cannot find any reference to one. I have heard about the brick kiln where the Morman church is now just South of the Australian Hotel. Does anyone know if Greymouth had another brick kiln. If you dig in our back yard you find reject and broken bricks everywhere but this is the first stamped one I have found. Thanks all.Map[1] ContributorCraig Passuello

That's interesting, brunner bricks tended to be here and there yet never seen one of those before, I guess there's clay in that area to make them, the hills behind you have clay.
Mike Dunn
Colin Waterman my uncle Johnny McGrath used to run the brick works opposite the Ashley hotel on the site that the church is now.

Cohens nursery was in that vicinity perhaps they used them in the gardens. I remember as a child visiting it with my parents every season, but it might have been slightly south of your house.
Stephen Roberts
There is every chance that come from the brickworks based behind the church.I can remember the remains of the works growing up as a kid in the area
Geoffrey King
My drive at Leith Crescent house was from old used bricks, mainly from the Old Boucher's IGA shop, around 4000 of them from memory and there were bricks with such markings plus a couple of other markings as well. I believe they have now been uplifted and asphalted laid.

The brick kiln was at the site of the Mormon Church Many years ago a water spout came off the coast ,went through the cemetery damaging headstones then hit the remains of the brickworks before it circled back to the Coast

Fire bricks tended to constitute the actual fire area in a fire place and red brick seemed to be predominant in the chimney.
