Joseph Churches was a pioneer importer commencing during the very early stages of Hokitika's development. He may also have had a pub at one stage. There is much info about him in the West Coast Times. That object looks like it is for stamping a seal as Ron Newton has said. J Churches did import bulk grog as recorded in shipping records so perhaps his business decanted off sherry in to bottles. Such bottles may have been identified by a J Churches sherry seal. This was not uncommon in this era e.g. benedictine bottles had a stamped wax seal.

Further to the above about Joseph Churches being an importer. He operated as a wholesale wine and spirit merchant plus had pubs. In Hoki he had the Flagstaff Hotel in Beach Street, the Carriers Arms and the Empire Hotels at various times. Business interests stretched to the outlying goldfields of Kanieri, Fox's and Brighton. He appears to have been an important business figure in early Hokitika.
