Davidsons made up the winch, drive, chain and frame only, they used old portable steam engines to provide the power. This is a Clayton and Shuttlesworth portable steam engine. The chain was a Davidson patent, I was fortunate enough to interview Heck Davidson many years ago, one of his jobs was to machine the replacement links as a young fella, said he left the foundry because this work affected his eyesight.

Gibson's of Redjack's had a steam winch right up to the 1960's and I think it went to the islands when it was replaced by a diesel Dispatch Leyland powered replacement.

There’s no rope on the drum so perhaps this beast was just built and not yet working.

The winch is being tested in Davidsons yard, have another photo somewhere of a similar winch being tested. At the heritage park we have two examples of Davidsons single drum winch. A horse was used to pull the rope back out to the next log. In our steam shed we are going to make up a display centered around the Davidson Foundry, the provided a lot of machinery to the timber industry - including 27 or 28 steam locomotives.

i remember a lot of the heavy wheels and boilers were dumped amongst toi toi blackberries on the old creck bed between foundry and residences of Fitzherbert street.

We lived at 32 Davie St 2 doors away from Hec and mrs D

Hec gave me a6inch bench vice before we came to Aus 40 years ago still has aplace on my workbench and used often it was hand made by Hec when he worked at the Foundary
