DescriptionI’m not sure about the year but think this pic was taken during my Great Grandfathers time in Rununga and Greymouth. My g-grandfather was Captain William Mollison, a very tough Scotsman and fighter in his younger years (around Nelson) and later on coaching boxing on the west coast. Pictured with towel over his shoulder he was the master of many ships out of Westport for some years and engineer of a gold dredge in the Lyell for the New Fedderson Company. Later he was bankrupted when his gold dredge sank on the Grey River. The smaller boxer in the centre is Lawry O’Neil who for many years owned the Star Tavern at Cape Foulwind. I believe Lawry won an Australasian championship around this time. The other picture I think is a relative of Rona Mitchell from Westport. Lei-Anne Gaby hi there. Lawry was such a lovely man. I cannot remember his wife’s name but as a little girl I was often allowed to enter the bar and listen to my dad playing the piano. Lawry as an old man was still capable of taking the badly behaved to task. They were always very kind to me. Lovely that the Star Tavern is still standing.AnneErrol Blocksage
