I remember a whale being washed up on the beach north of Hokitika about early 70's (I think). Lots of people had gone to look at it. Can't remember what happened to it

Yes. We lived across the road from the beach in Cobden for years. Lower Ward St. And the cows that got washed up after a flood from up country

Graham Hay this is something that has happened way back when only Maori occupied New Zealand. There were reasons for the whale to deteriorate slowly on the beach.. the Whales jawbone and teeth hold almost the same value to Maori as a greenstone.. it is gifted to the tribe of the area.. not just any Maori
As for DOC.. they are quite happy to take over as they like to disect the whale for tests and find the cause of death.. so no, the maori don't leave it to Doc as you refered..
