Grey . My granddad Duncan McRae dropped a chunk of gold in my hand when he was showing me over the dredge as a boy. I got a shock at how heavy it was.

My dad Blake FW Huffam and oldest brother Blake John Huffam were both winchmen on this dredge ( the meccano model of which, built by young Blake, is in the Hokitika Museum. Living only about 300 yards from it when operating in Prendergasts paddocks, the screeching, agonising, groaning noise it made didn't seem to worry us all that much. And it operated 6 days a week, 24 hrs a day.

I'm too young to remember the real one but I do remember going to see the meccano model. It was next door to the school and I think our class went from there.

afurther not is that much of the high tailings have been flattened and pinus radiata trees were planted on them. Tailings were great places to get blackberries too.

Thanks Laura. While that was going on l was working in the office after Bunty MacCrae left.& Waiuta wound up. I finished Friday in Waiuta & Started on Monday at the Dredge office in Ikamatua.

Yes. I went back down the Coast every year while Laurel Russell &marshall were alive. & then there was none.

My Aunty Bunty McRae worked in the dredge office for years.. l can remember the model dredge working when I was a kid. It was amazing . Such an amazing working model made by an amazing man.

My father, George August, was the electrician on the Hukarere dredge. I believe Sandy Keith was the dredge master.

Patricia August when l was 17 l knitted a dress for your mother Olly & one for Geourge Williams wife. . She was Nick & Ginger Hamptons sister.1951 l think. Gave up when l got a job at the Waiuta co-opfor real money. My wage was 30 shillings a week.
