Oh what a memory. Thank you. I was hopeless using those pencils. Preferred my tiny bit of blackboard along the wall.
And the desk for two which was joined to a seat which flipped up so the we could stand to attention - well sometimes.

In Australia, I used a slate in Year 1 with my sponge in a Vegemite jar of water and was so excited when in Year 2 I got to use a pencil and paper. I could hardly contain my excitement. Mind you, that was probably the most exciting thing that happened to me at school... I hated it.

I had a slate, but not sure if it was from school or a present from someone. I was primer one in 1953 and I’m pretty sure it was pencil and paper by then. Also small blackboards around the classroom and we practiced our letters with chalk.

When I was in the primers in the mid fiffties they had small slates attached to the wall with your name on it for the year. That was how I learnt to spell my first name. It was only many years kater when I got my birth certificate I was spelling my name different to it. It was spelt Phylis

How many were taught by Ena Patterson!
Wrote on slate in 1949 at Landing school with Ena, who lived close by then. A chalk board was fitted to the front right of the single room school. She taught P1 to Std 6.
When the school closed there were 7 pupils, 5 of them O'Regans.
