About this image
DescriptionTonight I have read in the Grey Star the death notice for Arthur Augustus Green aged 96. Firstly condolences to family and friends.
Secondly I will express regret in not realising that Arthur was still alive until very recently. I see from the notice that he has been a resident of Granger House. When living in the forestry camp at Totara Flat for a stint in the 70's and again in 1980 I got to know Artie quite well. On Friday nights I often gave him a ride in to Greymouth. He was a prolific talker with a sharp memory. I used to quiz him on stuff and let him talk and learnt some interesting stuff. In some ways he reminded of the movie character Forest Gump i.e. no Einstein but a refreshing honesty and some remarkable traits. A true character of the Grey Valley has passed on!

I also knew Arthur for many years firstly as an employee of the NZ Forest Service where he worked and later in the hospital and residential facilities where I worked. I used to take Arthur for outings to Totara Flat. In later years I took Arthur along with another support worker to see his sister and other family in Nelson. Rest in peace Arthur. You have had a good innings.

RIP Artie. I knew him from my time at Totara Flat. What a character. I could tell a lot of yarns about Artie. He loved biking down the Totara Flat pub after work & being the first to chalk his name up for a game of pool.

Sounds like a real Character,, We used to go over to Greymouth very regularly when we were kids staying with mums family the Woods in Murray St, Great people and many great memories, I kept going over through the years often taking sacks of bluff oysters to open n sell on the Coast you could imagine the folks my mates n I met on the way and the mateship given by them. Can still smell that beautiful night air after rollin out of a pub late in the evening, So how the hell did I wind up here n Auckland, Story for nother day

My husband Murray is Arthur’s cousin. We always have loved Arthur and first met him when I was 18 years old. Irene was Murray’s Mum. We live in Auckland now and always visited Arthur at Granger House. They were his family and amazing to him. We visited April. He still had his gorgeous smile and a real twinkle still in his eyes. RIP Arthur. We loved you.

Many thanks folks for all these posts. My mum (Irene) was Arthur's welfare guardian for many years. When the task got beyond her she asked me to take over. Whilst we are Auckland residents we were able to make frequent visits to see Arthur whilst he was in Granger house. I must say they were unbelievably kind to Arthur and even arranged a small farewell remembrance for him as in their words "he was part of our Granger House family - we loved him".
Kirsty Cadigan
