Tony Kokshoorn do we know who designed and built the spire in 1906? It’s a
Long bow, but William Hill was an architect in GREYMOUTH,and would have been 30 years old in 1906. Family oral history has it that he was the architect for one of the church’s spires, but we don’t know which one.

Keith Funnell The architect was Frank Petrie.He also designed the Cathedral in Christchurch and Dunedin.

Denise Lois Gordon - Hill … who did William Hill work with and/or for in his early years? Sounds as if Francis W Petrie was not a local, so if there is a connection it may be a collaboration with a Grey-based firm?

Baptised there, 1st Communion there, Confirmed there and married to Anne Maher there in 1959. Last celebrated 62 years married. My newly ordained brother, Peter Conaghan officiated. His first wedding. He must have done something because we are still together !!

Spire damaged in the Inangahua earthquake 1968 …so it was taken down sometime after that for safety reasons I guess.

And like so many of you …great memories …I was also baptized there …first communion, confirmation and married to Chris Holland in 1966 …by father Connor I recall. Anyone remember Monsignor Long?

Diane Holland started my career as an altar boy under the famous monsignor long -at Ruru as mr kokshoorn would remember -carried it on at St Pats too for a few years. weddings funerals masses concelebrated masses with assorted bishops -ah the memories.

Diane Holland Monsignor Long used to say Mass in Cobden when I was young, never on time, always in a hurry in his 40s Ford two-door V8, had the nick name of the "late Msgr. Long" even before his passing on.
