DescriptionThis is James Hunter, Mayor of Westport for one term from 1953 to 1956 and his TWIN brother William who was deputy mayor…They were also dentists who shared the same practice in Westport.. a very unique piece of Westland History. The twins were born in Dunedin, educated in Southland and were also together in Egypt in World War 2. Photos courtesy NZ Pictorial Jan 1955. We came down from Reefton to attend Hunters Denist as Reefton didn't have a town denist.

I went to Hunters Dentist, in Wakefield Street, I think.

Sounds like half the town went to the Hunter twins. Mum had to take me there because the dental nurse refused to treat me. She slapped my face because I wouldn't open my mouth so I bit her when she presented her fingers to my teeth.

There was lots of pluses going to Westport to the denist 1 a ride in the railcar, 2 a weekend stay with my Grandparents, OH and the dentist visit.

Remember them well, as a child,we were sent through from Karamea on Gibbs transport bus, to have our dental work done, they were not very patient with children, I loathed going to see them. Not good memories from me!!
