In 1924 Ray became a qualified New Zealand locomotive fireman and later in 1932 he became a qualified locomotive engineer. Ray had a long career and earned a 40 Year Service Medal.

I don’t recall the two story part but the lean to behind it was there until the early eighties

That looks quite early, is there a date? 1956 apparently! Standard shunting yard lookout, loved the way they decorated the buildings with pikes and the skill that went into the spouting and downpipes is incredible

I remember the two storey part, I think all the signal control levers were in there. I can recall hearing stories from the old Brunner players who would go there on Saturday nights. They would drink beer and play cards with the signalman on duty, their coach would not see them in the local pubs.

Gavin Menzies I knew both Bill and John well, used to have a beer with them at the Embassy Hotel in Christchurch, a few years back.

Right there Pauline even when the switching house was removed the smaller structure lasted for a very long time it is hard to imagine now just how busy the place was but busy it was
